Assaults On Police In Cambs Up 45%, Conservatives Reveal

The number of assaults on police officers in Cambridgeshire has jumped dramatically in the last year, according to figures obtained by the Conservatives.

Data released under the Freedom of Information Act reveals that there were 136 assaults on police officers in Cambridgeshire in 2006, up 45% from the 94 recorded in 2005.

Commenting on these figures, South East Cambridgeshire MP Jim Paice, who met with Chief Constable Julie Spence last Friday, said:

“I hope that this jump does not mean a huge increase in the number of people willing to attack police officers but these figures are a reminder of the dangers faced by officers on the beat and underline the need for them to be provided with the best possible protective equipment and training.”
