17 May 2007 Paice Hears Pupils’ Concerns On Milton Country Park
South East Cambridgeshire MP Jim Paice has visited Milton Primary School to talk to pupils about the future of Milton Country Park.
The visit was arranged following a letter writing campaign by pupils concerned about the threat of closure.
Mr Paice said: "There is a great deal of concern about the threat to Milton Country Park and that was passionately conveyed in the letters I received from pupils at the school.
"The park means so much to these young people and I will continue to work with the district council to ensure that it remains open.
"It is extremely important that children have outdoor spaces like this where they can enjoy healthy activities, fresh air and learn about nature and the environment.
"The closure of the park would be a disaster for local people – both young and old – and I have been assured that the council is working hard to fund a long-term solution to protect it from reductions in Government funding."
Jim also answered questions about his job as an MP to fit in with the school’s focus on citizenship as part of PSHE.
Deputy Headteacher, John Cattermole, said: "Our children were very excited that their letters should provoke such a response. They really enjoyed listening to what Jim had to say about saving the Country Park, and they learnt a great deal when he spoke about his job and what happens in parliament.
“Year 5 have been learning about local democracy as part of Citizenship and PSHE, and to have their MP explain how the House of Commons works was a truly enlightening experience.
"We have now had visits from Jane Coston of the Parish Council and Councillor Murfitt of South Cambridgeshire District Council as a result of our letters, some of which have also been printed in the Milton Village View and Cambridge Evening News. The children hope that their letter writing can play a part in saving Milton Country Park.”
