15 March 2005Paice Raises Concerns Over Newmarket Speed Camera
Jim Paice, MP for South East Cambridgeshire, has asked the Cambridgeshire Safety Camera Partnership to explain their decision to erect a speed camera on the eastbound carriageway of the A14, just after the A11 joins it after Newmarket.
Jim said: “My constituents want to know why this new camera has been located after the traffic has merged and where there appears to be no serious accident record.
“The location of speed cameras such as this one needs to be clearly justified if we are to be convinced that their purpose is road safety rather than revenue raising.
“What concerns me is that speed cameras do little to detect the real criminals behind the wheel. Only traffic police can do this and the Conservatives have pledged to give Chief Constables the chance to restore the cuts Labour have made. We will clamp down on the uninsured and dangerous drivers on our roads and remove the speed cameras that are cash raisers, not life savers.”
