Press Release
2 November 2005Paice Meets Local Trade Justice Campaigners
Jim Paice met constituents from South East Cambridgeshire this evening who travelled to London to take part in the Trade Justice Lobby’s mass rally outside Parliament.
Jim said: “I salute the efforts of the Trade Justice Lobby in focusing attention on the scandal of Western protectionism ahead of the WTO talks this December. Delivering trade justice is the key to making poverty history and I was pleased to be able to discuss this issue with my constituents taking part in the lobby outside Parliament.
“As Shadow Agriculture Minister I have been pushing for action to open our markets to exports from poorer countries, continuing reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, and an end to export subsidies that harm farmers in the developing world. However, as we see with the proposals for sugar, sometimes there has to be time for farming industries both here and in the developing countries to adapt to change.”
He concluded: “Extreme poverty is an issue of deep concern and I will continue to press the Government for practical steps to eliminate it.”
