Jim welcomes A14 announcement

Jim has welcomed proposals from the Department of Transport (DfT) for major investment along the A14 in Cambridgeshire. The proposals are designed to address congestion and long term capacity issues on the A14 on which Jim has campaigned for many years.
The proposals include a new bypass around Huntingdon and widening of the Cambridge Northern Bypass between Milton and Girton.
Jim said, ‘I have long said that we need major improvements to the A14 and so I welcome the news of this major new scheme. There is still much work to do before these proposals can become reality and I will be pressing for this to happen as quickly as possible given how long we have been waiting for a solution to the problems on the A14.’
Studies by the DfT have shown that funding for the scheme can be generated, in part, through tolling a length of the new A14, but no final decisions have been taken.
Jim said, ‘It is important that any new project is not just effective, but also affordable unlike the previous Government’s scheme. I will obviously be studying any plans which emerge very carefully to make sure my constituents in villages surrounding the A14 will not be penalised unfairly by any toll, but we do need to make sure that we explore every funding option completely to make sure that, this time, the scheme is delivered as promised.’
